Johtis recruitment! Task introductions!

Johtis recruitment! Task introductions!

It’s that time of the year again, Christmas Party and Election meeting is knocking on the door, which means we are not looking for people interested in tasks on the Board for next year! Time and place for the Christmas party will be announced separately soon. On this page the Board of 2024 will introduce their jobs in their own words, so you can choose ones that you find interesting and send in an application. Board members for the next year will be elected at the Christmas Party/Election Meeting in November, more info coming about that soon. But it doesn’t matter if you can’t make it to the meeting, you can still let us know of your interest towards a position and set yourself up as a nominee beforehand. After reading through the task descriptions, you can let us know of your interest by filling out this form.

Let’s begin!

COMMODORE

First up with an introduction is our commodore, Leo! ✨

The commodore is the chairman of the board and the front figure of the club. The core responsibility of the commodore is to lead and represent the club. The commodore works closely with other board members as well as many other people in the club. The role of commodore is one of the best if not the best role when it comes to getting to know fellow club members. The role also comes with the great perk of a commodore pennant which the commodore can proudly hoist when sailing.

The role of commodore is demanding, but rewarding at the same time. Strong commitment and motivation is required. Some thick skin is also useful. There are a lot of opinions and interests within the club, so disagreements can be a thing. The most important thing is to make decisions that are good for the club as a whole. There should be enough available slots in the personal calendar of a would-be commodore.

One of the board members is elected as vice-commodore, who would take the reins if the commodore is prevented from holding a board meeting for some reason.

TREASURER

Hi, it’s Sini here 👋. I’ve been serving as the treasurer this year. The treasurer’s role is quite independent and educational, giving you hands-on experience with managing the association’s finances. Even though you hold the responsibility, there’s always support available from other board members and past treasurers – no prior experience needed! When I started, both board work and sailing were completely new to me. But as treasurer, I’ve had the chance to do and learn a lot of things that will be useful for a long time to come. I’ve also racked up a good amount of volunteer hours for next year’s sailing trips!

SECRETARY

Hello! I’m Saga, and I’ve been working as the secretary on the 2024 board.

The extent of a secretary’s duties can vary greatly depending on the association, and even within the same association, based on the composition of the board. When you become a secretary at TRIP, you don’t really need to know much in advance—at least, I didn’t.

The primary responsibility of the secretary is to prepare the agenda for board meetings and take minutes during the meetings. For this reason, the secretary must be present at all meetings, either in person or, in exceptional cases, remotely, throughout the season. Additionally, it’s important to be ready to collaborate with the chairperson, for instance, in drafting the action plan and report. Beyond this, the secretary can easily participate in other activities, such as organising events, maintaining the website, or assisting the head of communications, if desired.

I highly recommend the position of secretary to any club member who is interested in becoming more active in the association but isn’t sure where to start.

Autumn greetings🍄

HEAD OF EDUCATION

Hello everyone! 🌊🌊🌊 I have worked in the board as Head of Education since 2023 and now after a couple of years it is time to retire from this job. The primary task of the Head of Education is, among other board responsibilities, to coordinate TRIP’s sailing courses and act as a contact person for education-related matters in the Board.

Every year, we organise navigation and practical sailing courses of various levels in English and Finnish, in addition to other varying training opportunities. In order to organise courses, you have to find and manage suitable times, trainers, facilities, students and materials. Every summer we also hold a Skipper School for our members who meet the criteria, the coordination of which has typically been the responsibility of the Head of Education.

The Head of Education cooperates with the principal of the sailing school, TRIP’s own teachers as well as teachers from outside the association. TRIP’s navigation and sailing courses are authorised, so the Head of Education is also in contact with the background organisations of the teaching.

In addition to coordinating course activities, the Head of Education, whenever possible, develops training practices at the same time, for example by renewing policies, organising workshops, looking for new training opportunities and updating the contents of the website and Google Drive. The role of the Head of Education is not the lightest in the Board, so a motivated and committed person is suitable for this role. Prior knowledge of different education systems is not mandatory – you learn by doing.

In addition to the fact that as a Head of Education you get to know at least the Finnish boating training system, you learn and develop in many other things as well. The package includes marketing and communication in different channels, organising events and meetings, creating forms, project management, planning and organising and much more. It’s a rewarding task, which, of course, gives you a lot of bee hours as a bonus if you want to make personal boat bookings. If you are interested, you can contact me with any questions at emmi.nevalainen@teekkaripurjehtijat.fi.

Greetings, Emmi 🙂

HEAD OF COMMUNICATIONS

This year we have two Heads of Communications, Jassu and Venla. So you can share the job with a friend, or you can build yourself a team around it, where you can get help when needed and share tasks. The primary task of the Head of Communications is producing the newsletter Tripylä, marketing courses, activities and events, and just sharing fun things on social media. It is possible to develop working methods in the direction you like and have fun with graphics and images! We are both artists from the Master’s programme in Photography at Aalto, so it has been nice to work with a familiar means of expression together. Working as Head of Communications doesn’t require previous experience in communications or visual cultures, and is an easy and fun job on the board. It is suitable for anyone wishing to utilise their creativity and learn more about how the association works. 🫧

We would be happy to act as advisors or in the communications team next year and assist the next Head of Communications. Please get in touch with us even with the smallest of questions or comments jasmine.farling@teekkaripurjehtijat.fi & venla.laksola@teekkaripurjehtijat.fi!

HEAD OF BOAT MAINTENANCE

Are you a passionate sailor who wants to take your skills to the next level and learn the deepest secrets of boating? Join us and step into the role of Head of Maintenance! This year, Head of Boat Maintenance for ElecTrip has been Benjamin, who is also the vice-commodore. There’s a total of three Heads of Boat Maintenance, one for each of the three keelboats, but only one of them is a member of the board, so that the board stays informed about the state of the boats. 🛠️

As Head of Boat Maintenance you will be responsible for the maintenance of boats, taking care of their servicing and repairs. You will also get to network by working in a team with experienced sailors. You don’t have to do everything yourself, but you can and should delegate things to, for example, the boat maintenance team. We, the former chief boat handlers, offer support, so no previous experience is required.

HEAD OF DINGHIES

Head of Dinghies in 2024 is Pauli! ⛵ In short, the Head of Dinghies takes care of the club’s dinghies. More concretely, the job includes dinghy maintenance and organising dinghy sailing events. The Head of Dinghies is also responsible for familiarising the members to the dinghies and teaching them sailing so that they can make their own reservations for the dinghies. Of course, the Head of Dinghies gets to sail too.

Of the three functional boats in the club’s possession two were used this year. The third boat had a crack in the bottom and was, thus, not used during the season. However, the maintenance work for fixing the boat has begun and we’ve made good progress. The two other boats had plenty of use because in addition to the familiar Dinghy Thursdays there were Dinghy Wednesdays and Dinghy Fridays. This way the members had better opportunities to try dinghy sailing.

If you like dinghy sailing, or sailing in general, doing boat maintenance, and organising events, the role of the Head of Dinghies could very well suit you.

HEAD OF EVENTS

In the 2024 season, we have not had an appointed Head of Events, but several events have been organised together with board members and other helping hands. Next year, it would be a nice job for the head of events to organise fun events and activities, both for current members and potential future members. The head of events organises, among other things, introductory sailings, student events, floatilla and pier dances, as well as the Annual Party every five years. 💃✨

Head of events would often work together with the Head of Communications in marketing and promoting future happenings. The head of events can also build an events team around them to assist with practical arrangements.

So, become the next Head of Events if you dream of organising the best party, the most epic Christmas party or the coolest summer picnic! In this job, you can innovate fun activities for student orienteering checkpoints and rummage through the club’s storage for all kinds of party flags and old sails for decoration purposes. Here is a fun job for a fun-loving person. 🕺

〰️

MEMBER OF THE BOARD

You can also be a member of the board without a specific role, which allows you to get to know tasks on the Board with a low threshold. In Alex’s case, as a long-time member of the club, he has acted as a senior expert, ensuring the continuity of the club’s operations. As a member of the board, you can vote on matters concerning the club, help other board members in various tasks as needed, or promote almost anything you want within the club. In general, board work includes, at least at a minimum, participation in board meetings and the board’s email responsibilities. Several things need an extra pair of hands during the year, where the Member of the Board can help, such as calculating bee hours, making an annual plan, budget planning, organising events, reserving facilities, etc! In this position, you can get to know how the club works from the inside, and contribute as much or as little as you can, depending on your situation. However, it would be desirable if you could join the Board meetings held approximately once every two weeks (either live or remotely) to discuss and vote on various topics.

So here is a role, which you can flexibly make your own! ⭐️

〰️

MEMBER OF JOHTIS

What is Johtis and why should I join it? As you probably already noticed, several board roles gather a team around them (for example boat maintenance team, events team, communications team), and these team members are therefore part of Johtis. Members of Johtis get to influence the club’s activities, but are not part of the board. A newcomer for the next season is the environmental team, so if you are interested in promoting and developing TRIP’s environmental practices, please contact the board.

The main language of the board meetings is Finnish, as it is the club’s official language, but you can freely use the language of your choice in Johtis. The people of Johtis are an important part of running the club and have the opportunity to have their voice heard in the club’s operations, as well as to learn more about the topic they wish. Join us and make the club better than ever before! 🐳

That’s all for now! Again, you can let us know if you are interested in one more tasks by filling out this form. Sending out the form doesn’t commit you to any task at this point, but helps us map out interest regarding the Election Meeting. Please be in touch with the Board if you have any questions or want to know more by sending an email to hallitus@teekkaripurjehtijat.fi. Before the Christmas Party, you can still ask questions face-to-face for example at the end of season sauna and boat maintenance bees on 26th October.

See you soon!
